Did you know? September is Fruits and Veggies-More Matters Month

Most folks know that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health; for example, people who eat a well-balanced, healthy diet can lower their risk for some chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.  Unfortunately, most of us still aren’t eating enough of them.

The Numbers

Only 1 in 3 adults eat the recommended amount of fruits every day.

Only 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended amount of vegetables every day.

Getting the Word Out

This month, the ODA is proud to participate in Fruits and Veggies-More Matters Month to raise awareness about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Here are some ideas to help your family fit more fruits and vegetables in to your day:

  • Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.
  • Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they’re ready for quick, healthy snacks.
  • Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week.
  • Make fruits and veggies a part of a fun family activity, such as a visiting a farmer’s market or a “U-Pick” farm.

Remember, eating more fruits and vegetables can be fun- and it’s worth it!
