Celebrate Maple Syrup Season, Help Protect Our Trees From the Asian Longhorned Beetle

As we saw on the blog last week, it’s maple syrup season in Ohio. With this exciting season upon us, many areas in Ohio are celebrating with maple syrup festivals, including Malabar Farm State Park which is currently hosting its 38th annual Maple Syrup Festival. The festival always occurs the first two weekends in March and is a great opportunity for folks to learn the history of maple syrup and get a firsthand look at how maple syrup is produced.

While we celebrate the maple syrup season it is also important to think of what we need to do to protect our maple trees from invasive species and ensure these celebrations can continue into the future. At the Ohio Department of Agriculture we work to detect invasive pests that pose a threat to our plants and trees. One invasive pest in particular poses a tremendous threat to maple trees; the Asian Longhorned Beetle.

In previous posts we have discussed the threat of the Asian Longhorned Beetle, and its presence in Clermont County, Ohio.  We continue to work with the United State Department of Agriculture Animal and Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) and other partners to eradicate the Asian Longhorned Beetle from Ohio. As part of these efforts, we are always looking to spread the word about this invasive pest, and make folks aware of the threat it poses to many trees in Ohio, including maple trees.  Maple trees not only contribute to Ohio’s economy through maple syrup production, but through the timber and nursery industries which employ hundreds of thousands of Ohioans.

We have set up an outreach table at Malabar Farm State Park for folks to take education materials, and learn why it is important to always be on the lookout for signs of the beetle.
